Richard Wittmann gehört dem Institut seit 2008 an, zunächst als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter, und seit 2011 in leitender Funktion (stellvertretende Institutsleitung: 2011 bis 2020 und erneut seit 1. Oktober 2022; kommissarische Institutsleitung: 9/2020 bis 10/2022). Nach dem Studium der Rechtswissenschaften, Islamwissenschaft und Turkologie an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München und an der Freien Universität Berlin, promovierte Richard Wittmann 2008 in den Fächern Geschichte und Nahostwissenschaften an der Harvard-Universität mit einer Dissertation mit dem Titel „Before Qadi and Grand Vizier: Intra-Communal Dispute Resolution among Christians and Jews in the Plural Society of 17th Century Istanbul”.

Im Mittelpunkt der Forschungsinteressen von Richard Wittmann steht die Rechts- und Sozialgeschichte des Osmanischen Reichs von seinen Anfängen bis zur Gründung der Republik Türkei. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt hierbei der Entwicklung des islamischen Rechts und der rechtlichen Praxis im Osmanischen Reich, der Nutzung islamischer Rechtsinstitute durch Nichtmuslime, Fragen der Identität und des Zusammenlebens im osmanischen Vielvölkerstaat, sowie der Berücksichtigung von Selbstzeugnissen als historische Quellen für das Studium des Osmanischen Reichs, insbesondere im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert.

Am Orient-Institut Istanbul betreut Richard Wittmann den Forschungsschwerpunkt Protestantischer Friedhof Feriköy: Zeugnis vierhundertjähriger protestantischer Präsenz in der Türkei sowie das Forschungsfeld Selbstzeugnisse als Quellen zur Geschichte des späten Osmanischen Reichs. Mithilfe von eigenen und als Herausgeber von Dr. Wittmann betreuten Publikationen wird angestrebt, die im Vergleich zu anderen Weltgegenden noch rudimentäre Selbstzeugnisforschung zu dieser Region voranzutreiben, indem Primärquellen erstmals erschlossen, ediert, oder zum Gegenstand von wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen gemacht werden. Zwei neu begründete Publikationsreihen, Memoria & Life Narratives of the Ottoman Realm (Mithrsg.: Christoph Herzog), die von Richard Wittmann editorisch betreut werden, stellen hierfür eigene Publikationsmöglichkeiten zur Verfügung. Einen weiteren wichtigen Bestandteil der Tätigkeiten im Rahmen dieses Forschungsfeldes bildet der Aufbau und die Koordination eines internationalen und interdisziplinären Forschungsnetzwerks zur Selbstzeugnisforschung für den östlichen Mittelmeerraum in osmanischer Zeit.
