Will Sumits ist Musikethnologe und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Projekt Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae (CMO) . In seiner Doktorarbeit an der School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) beschäftigte er sich mit der Entwicklung der zentralasiatischen Kunstmusiktraditionen zwischen dem 17. und dem 19. Jahrhundert. Er unterrichtete Musikethnologie an der İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi und an der University of Central Asia in Duschanbe (Tadschikistan). Für das Aga Khan Music Programme arbeitete er an der Entwicklung von Programmen zur musikalischen Ausildung in ganz Zentralasien. Will Sumits ist Sammler von frühen Tonaufnahmen und historischen Musikinstrumenten, von denen viele heute in verschiedenen Museumssammlungen zu finden sind. Für seine Forschungen zur zentralasiatischen Musikgeschichte hat er mehrere Stipendien erhalten und war Jurymitglied beim Internationalen Mugham-Festival und -Wettbewerb in Baku (Aserbaidschan). Seine laufenden Forschungen konzentrieren sich auf die historische Entwicklung der Musiktheorie und Aufführungspraxis im Nahen Osten. Derzeit ist er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Orient-Instituts Istanbul im Rahmen des CMO-Projekts, wo er mit der Erweiterung des CMO-Quellenkatalogs spätosmanischer Musikmanuskripte und -notationen betraut ist.
