Dr. Gülşah Başkavak ist seit Februar 2019 am Orient-Institut Istanbul als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Forschungsbereich Mensch, Medizin und Gesellschaft beschäftigt. Dort beschäftigt sie sich aktuell mit Fragestellungen zu Körpersoziologie, Medizintechnik und Digitale Gesundheit. Dr. Başkavak promovierte 2016 im Fach Soziologie an der Middle East Technical University (METU) Ankara. Im Rahmen ihrer Dissertation Understanding Surgical Craft in the Changing Context of Technology, Transformation of Healthcare and Marketization: A Case Study on Surgeons in Istanbul, Turkey führte sie qualitative und ethnographische Untersuchungen in Krankenhäusern, Kliniken und Operationssälen durch. Ihre Interessengebiete umfassen medizinisch-technologische Beziehungen, technologische Transformation und Arbeit, Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung (STS), Soziologie des Handwerks, Medizin- sowie Professionssoziologie. Dr. Başkavak schloss ihr Studium an der Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften der Istanbuler Universität ab und erhielt einen MA-Abschluss von der Marmara-Universität mit ihrer Arbeit The Impact of Information and Communication Technologies on Power Distribution in Organizations. Sie arbeitete als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der METU und der Yıldız Technical University und beteiligte sich an verschiedenen nationalen und internationalen Forschungsprojekten zu Gesundheitssoziologie, Kriminologie und Religionssoziologie. Während ihres Studiums verbrachte sie ein Jahr an der Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Dr. Baskavak forscht derzeit zu Themen wie Medizinsoziologie, Körpersoziologie, neue Operationstechnologien und Patienten, Digitale Gesundheit, Professionalität in der Medizin, Handwerk und Technologie.
