Astrid Menz studied Turkology, Islamic Philology, and Islamic Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. She completed her studies in 1991 with a Master’s thesis on the Turkish of the second Turkish generation in Germany. She was a research assistant in the Department of Oriental Studies at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz from 1993 to 1999. She finished her PhD in 1998 with a dissertation entitled “Gagausische Syntax : eine Studie zum kontaktinduzierten Sprachwandel” (Gagauz Syntax: A Study on Contact-Induced Language Change). From 1999 to 2004, she worked as a research fellow at the Orient-Institut Istanbul. In winter semester 2005/06 and summer semester 2006, she taught on behalf of the Chair of Turkology in the Department of Linguistics and Philology at Uppsala University in Sweden. Between 2006 and 2008, she taught in the Department of Turkish Languages and Literatures at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. Since September 2006, she has been the head librarian at the Orient-Institut Istanbul.

Since 1994, Astrid Menz is responsible for the entries on the Turkic languages of the Bibliographie Linguistique/Linguistic Bibliography. Since 2008, she has been a member of the editorial board of the journal “Turkic Languages.”
