Dr. Alexandre Toumarkine was recruited as research fellow at the Orient-Institut Istanbul in April 2011. He headed a collective research project on “New Religious Movements in Turkey” that formed the basis for the current ANR-DFG research program “New Religiosities in Turkey: Reenchantment in a Secularized Muslim Country?”. He studied at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Paris) and in the Department of History at Sorbonne University (Paris IV). He received his doctorate in Contemporary History from Sorbonne University (Paris IV) in December 2000. During the 1990s, he worked as a researcher at the French Institute for Anatolian Studies (IFEA)–Istanbul and then taught at various universities in Istanbul (Marmara, Galatasaray and Yıldız Technical). From 2005 to 2010 he was scientific director of the French Institute for Anatolian Studies (IFEA).
He has cooperated with numerous Turkish academic institutions, among them TÜBITAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) and various universities, museums, foundations, and research centers.
Besides religion, his other fields of interest related to the late Ottoman Empire and Turkey are: migrations, the Balkans and the Caucasus, cultural history, social history of war, psychiatry, psychoanalysis and historiography.
